Ventrilo Requirement

We use Ventrilo to communicate during raids.  If you plan to raid with us, you must have Ventrilo and be able to listen to the raid leaders' instructions.  You do not need a microphone, nor do you need to speak on vent, but we encourage it.

Visit www.ventrilo.com to obtain the necessary software. We use the proper codecs so that you can connect from a Mac as well as a PC.

Connection Instructions

For the address and password, contact an officer or just ask someone to spam vent info in guild or raid chat.

They will give you three things: an address, a port, and a password.  We may give you the address and port like "server.name.com:port", but they will be separate fields in vent.

Step One - Create a new server

Step Two - Enter server details

About Microphones

We definitely encourage you to invest in a microphone so you can speak up during raids with important information.

Generally you'll get the best results from a USB headset.  You can find them for $30-$60 online at places like www.newegg.com.  Personally I recommend Logitech or Plantronics, but there's always new brands popping up that can be good.

A standalone microphone will often sound distant and quiet, especially the cheap ones.

Once you have a headset or mic, please take some time to play with the settings, with special attention to:
  1. Your outgoing volume
  2. A push-to-talk key (so we don't have to listen to you sneeze).
  3. Feedback (by default vent will not play your voice over your speakers, but if you have two computers in the same room running vent, feedback becomes possible)

Normalizing Volumes

If you're bothered by a wide variety of volumes in people's voices, there's a trick you can set up. This adapts the volume of everyone so they sound roughly the same, no matter how quiet or loud they are.

This only works with Windows because you have to filter it through DirectX.
  1. Go into Setup under the Voice tab, and on the right you will see settings for the input device. If you have DirectSound you will be able to check "Use DirectSound," which activates the "SFX" button in the corner.
  2. Clicking "SFX" (short for Special Effects) brings up a window that lets you add and remove effects from Ventrilo. Adding "compressor" will open its Properties window.

There are 6 settings for the compression effect.
  • Gain 0
  • Attack 0.01
  • Release 200 - 500
  • Threshold -30
  • Ratio 100
  • Pre delay 4.0
